Fresh, fruity, and full of good vibes, rosé wines are the rockstars of summer sipping… and so much more. Behind these summer hits hides a humble yet mighty grape variety: Grenache.

With its pale pink glow, red berry aromas, and easy-going attitude, Grenache is the ultimate grape for rosé that gets your taste buds dancing. Grenache, Garnacha… the globe-trotting grape

Born in Spain as Garnacha, this grape variety has since unpacked its bags in southern France (especially in Languedoc-Roussillon), Australia, and even sunny California where it’s proudly called “grenache rosé”.

Basically, Grenache is the backpacker of cépages (grape varieties): it adapts to any climate, tans beautifully, and speaks every dialect of terroir. It’s one of the most widely planted grapes in the world.

  • Grenache Noir: the bold red type behind rich red wines (Châteauneuf-du-Pape is its spiritual home) and stunning rosé wine.

  • Grenache Blanc: the floral, low-key genius.

At On The Cusp, we use 100% Grenache rosé in our IGP Saint-Guilhem-Le-Désert cuvée 2024, right in the heart of the Hérault Valley, deep in Languedoc, the other Mediterranean South of France. Because hey, Provence isn’t the only one that knows how to make killer rosé wine.

When it’s time to make a jaw-dropping rosé, Grenache brings out the ice buckets. It’s the go-to cépage behind the best rosé wines in the South, especially in Provence and Languedoc.

Why’s it such a star?

Because it checks all the boxes: a pale, almost Insta-worthy color, lush aromas of ripe strawberry and tangy raspberry, and just a hint of sweet spice that makes you go, “Wait, what is that ? I love it.”


In the winemaking world, Grenache is a chameleon. It plays well with different techniques:

  • Direct press: super light, elegant, pale-pink beauties.

  • Skin maceration: the grapes chill with their skins a bit to boost aroma.

  • Saignée method: a classic, old-school trick. You start as a red, then “bleed” off some rosé juice after a few hours. More depth, more drama.
